The KOSPI index has continued its upward trajectory, marking its sixth consecutive day of gains. In today's session (February 18, 2025) the KOSPI closed at 2,626.81 points, registering an increase of 16.39 points or 0.63% from the previous day.
Samsung Electronics shares gained 1.61% on the day, as the company started a buyback of 3 trillion won, and matched this with the announcement of a cancellation of 3.05 trillion won of its own stock. This amounts to some 6 trillion won in shareholder value being generated.
Sector-specific performance highlighted construction, machinery, and equipment as leading contributors, with gains of 4.04% and 3.48%, respectively. Other sectors, such as transportation equipment and parts, rose by 2.22%, while the medical and precision instruments sector saw a 1.09% increase. However, sectors like insurance, food and beverages, faced declines of 2.43% and 1.20%, respectively.
The KOSDAQ index also mirrored the optimistic sentiment closing at 773.65, a rise of 5.17 points or 0.67% from the previous session. On the KOSDAQ, ABL Bio was a standout performer with a significant gain of 21.19%.
