Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) have entered into a new partnership that is set to significantly expand the reach of Apple's streaming service. Subscribers of Amazon's Prime Video will soon have the option to add Apple TV+ to their existing subscription, enhancing the content offerings available to them.
This collaboration marks a notable move by two of the largest players in the technology and streaming industry and aims to help them both compete with industry leader Netflix‘s 260million subscribers. As streaming services continue to proliferate and competition intensifies, partnerships such as this could become more common as a means to retain and grow subscriber bases. For it's own part, Amazon Prime Video is now up above 230million subscribers, although the service itself is included with a mix of products. The two are now almost neck and neck in the US streaming market with 22%, where Apple TV+ trails with 9%.
The partnership between Apple and Amazon is expected to debut later this month and will allow Prime Video users to access Apple TV+ content directly through the Prime Video platform. This integration simplifies the user experience by consolidating multiple streaming services into a single interface, providing convenience for subscribers who might otherwise need to navigate between different apps and subscriptions.
Both Apple and Amazon have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal, but it underscores a strategic approach to leverage each company's strengths. For Apple, the partnership broadens the availability of its Apple TV+ service, which launched in November 2019. Since then, it has been actively building a library of original content, including critically acclaimed shows like “The Morning Show,” “Ted Lasso,” and “For All Mankind.” This move could help Apple TV+ increase its user base, which is crucial in the race for streaming dominance.
Amazon's Prime Video, on its part, has a robust presence globally and offers an extensive range of movies, TV shows, and its own original productions. The addition of Apple TV+ as a Prime Video Channel will augment its content offerings and provide even more value to Prime subscribers. Amazon already has a Channels program that includes other premium services like HBO, Showtime, and Starz, which customers can add to their Prime membership for additional fees.
This partnership does not mark the first collaboration between Apple and Amazon. In the past, the two tech giants have worked together to bring the Apple Music service to Amazon's Echo devices, and Amazon has been selling Apple products on its marketplace after a period of restricted availability.
The strategic deal is expected to benefit both Apple and Amazon in their respective quests for greater shares of the streaming market. Apple achieves broader distribution for its content, while Amazon enhances the attractiveness of its Prime subscription offering, likely leading to higher member retention and satisfaction rates.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, partnerships such as the one between Apple TV+ and Amazon's Prime Video represent a shift in the dynamic between competitors in the industry. While competition remains fierce, collaborative efforts such as this demonstrate that alliances can be mutually advantageous, ultimately providing a win-win for companies and subscribers alike.
