In a significant boost to in-flight connectivity options, BAE Systems (LON: BA), together with Stellar Blu Solutions, has announced the successful completion of essential qualifications for their latest aeronautical product.

This marks an important milestone in the aviation industry’s journey towards increased connectivity during flight.

The two partners have achieved a major accomplishment with the ESA (Electronic System Antenna) undergoing DO-160 airborne equipment qualification in March. Notably, it progressed directly from its original design to production, evidencing its high maturity, quality, and the reliable legacy it carries forth. This streamlined path from design to production underscores the robustness of the device and serves as a testament to the collaboration's commitment to quality and reliability.

In another stride towards market readiness, the Sidewinder terminal, developed through the joint venture, secured its first supplemental type certification (STC) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following its flight testing in June. This certification is crucial as it allows the integration of the Sidewinder technology onto regional jets, facilitating broader distribution and use in the aviation sector. The prompt attainment of the STC post-flight testing depicts the terminal's compliance with stringent regulations and its readiness for deployment in commercial settings.

To meet the burgeoning demand within the industry, both BAE Systems and Stellar Blu have ramped up production to fulfill an existing backlog of over 1,000 orders. Their roadmap also includes global performance validation and more testing on an additional aircraft, ensuring comprehensive evaluation and demonstration of the terminal's capabilities across varied operational contexts.

The synergy between BAE Systems and Stellar Blu goes beyond just production; it encompasses the co-development of cutting-edge terminal designs that are optimised for both Ku and Ka low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. In their respective roles, BAE Systems supplies the necessary antennas and software, while Stellar Blu integrates these components into the Sidewinder terminal. The terminal notably features elements that support multi-orbit connectivity and integrator kits suited for government applications, expanding its applicability.

One of the distinguishing achievements includes meeting all qualification requirements even without an external radome.
