Airlines are encountering significant challenges in persuading investors to support the travel industry's recovery despite reporting robust profits and investing billions of dollars in acquiring new aircraft.
The MSCI index, which monitors global airline stocks, trades approximately 40% lower than its pre-pandemic levels. Since the beginning of July, it has seen a decline of more than 20%, despite several airlines, such as British Airways' parent company IAG, Singapore Airlines, and EasyJet, posting record earnings.
In a substantial show of confidence, airlines have placed orders for over 2,800 new planes this year alone, signalling their belief in an impending period of substantial growth within the industry.
Nevertheless, soaring fuel prices, economic uncertainties, and persistent concerns about consumer spending have left investors apprehensive. Investors have traditionally viewed airlines as a cyclical sector vulnerable to external shocks, ranging from volcanic ash clouds and pandemics to economic downturns.
Certain airlines continue to attract investor attention. Several Asian carriers, such as Singapore Airlines, have seen their stock prices perform well, benefiting from a post-pandemic surge in travel as the region gradually reopened.
In the United States, airlines with limited exposure to the decelerating domestic market have outshone their counterparts. Additionally, Ryanair has garnered attention as a potential long-term winner in Europe. The airline capitalised on the disruptions caused by the pandemic to initiate a period of rapid expansion.
Interestingly, on the same day that Air France-KLM announced record profits in the third quarter, its shares hit an all-time low. Analysts, like Bernstein's Alex Irving, suggest that investors are scrutinising results while closely monitoring macroeconomic risks heading into the northern hemisphere winter.
In Europe, investor scepticism persists despite airlines reporting robust demand for winter travel. However, recent data indicates a decline in global bookings following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, raising questions about the winter season's prospects.
